Are you tired of your kids taking too long to get ready each morning?
Always running late for school or day care?
'Beat the Buzzer' is a positive reinforcement game designed to train kids to get themselves ready to leave the house. Your child has to complete all of the tasks on the checklist before the buzzer goes off to receive their reward.
First, you and your child work together to write a list of tasks they need to complete each morning, and agree on a time when these tasks must be completed by.
For example:
- Eat breakfast
- Brush teeth
- Wash face
- Get dressed
- Brush hair
Each day, your child should check the list of tasks, and keep an eye on the timer, to make sure the list is completed in time. Encourage your child to check the list rather than telling them what to do next to help them become more independent. When the list is completed in time, your child will earn a reward.
Choose a small reward for 'Beating the Buzzer' each day (such as stickers or stamps), and a bigger reward for when your child is successful several days in a row (such as a trip to a museum or favourite park on the weekend). As your child starts 'Beating the Buzzer' more consistently, begin to phase out the rewards over the next few weeks. Your child might need to 'Beat the Buzzer' two, three, four, then five days in a row to earn the reward. Make the reward a little bigger as they become less frequent. Eventually, you can make rewards a surprise and your child won’t know when a reward is on offer – it just happens every now and then.
Parents often don’t feel like praising their child for being ready on time because it’s a behaviour that is expected. But before you can expect good behaviour, you have to teach it.
'Beat the Buzzer' is a game developed by researchers from RMIT University in Victoria, Australia.
